5 of Sheldon's Most Rhythmical Lines

Out of sudden, accidentally, I spent a weekend finished watching the Season 8 of The Big Bang Theory and I'm hooked all over again.

I must say, I love how Sheldon transformed. The writers made it so subtle that now we look back, Sheldon's character grow episode by episode, season by season since the introduction of Amy in the end of Season 3. Though I did not like how the way Amy's character developed in Season 4, the writers finally found the rhythm in Season 5, and since then, Sheldon's dynamic with Amy was adorable in a fascinating way. I love how Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik make these characters grow slowly, steadily and wonderfully.

So much so I want to write about how I feel about their romantic relationship (I do notice what happened in Season 9, where they finally 'joining the club of all of humanity'), or to talk about how well the writers planned for Sheldon's self-discovery and continue developing his social and interpersonal skills, I missed the neurotic guy in the earlier seasons (this is a sitcom anyway). He is stubborn, irritating and annoying (And yet, Jim Parsons successfully turned him into one of the most adorable characters in the fictional world), and he steals the show every time!

When they first started the show, they give us a fantastic character whose passion for science was the core of this existence. The writers worked very hard to put every possible imaginable nerdy awkward moment into Sheldon's character, and they always give him the best lines. Jim Parsons always speak it rhythmically and I missed that! I missed how Sheldon speaks as if he is singing passionately.

Here are some of the rhythmical lines that I love (limited to clips that I managed to find on Youtube):

1. Guess What Just Happened
- This is not only my favorite rhythmical lines, but also one of those scenes that defines Sheldon. His out of the world, childlike imagination makes him so adorable that no matter how much you were irritated by him, moments like this always make sure he immediately has surplus in the emotional bank account.

2. The Drake Equation
- Even during the days when we had to memorize a lot of formulas, we never able to say this the way Jim Parsons says it! As if he is reciting a poem.

3. Sheldon's Spot
- This is one of the famous quotes from The Big Bang Theory. Even Penny had a chance to say these lines a few seasons later. Still, Jim says it the best.

4. Sheldon Star Wars Fascination
- Sounds like a poem to a Star Wars fan :)

5. The Tall Man From Cornwall
- After all, this is a children's book adaptation

Why I Can Relate to Sheldon Cooper - Dress Up

I can sure relate to Sheldon. I hate dressing up. Dress up to please others is more of animal instinct. I think. Of course, I do dress up once in a while, for the function, not to my liking.

I need only comfortable clothing. That's the primary criteria for selecting my daily wear. Of course, having some geeky / cute / nerdy / funny design gives me extra secret self-amusement.

When I was in my secondary school, I once told one of my close friends that clothing to me is for keep warm and for socially correctness. She was shock, and I rarely use that phrase in making my points in my life anymore.

Schrödinger's Cat

Look at today's Google home page! It is Erwin Schrodinger's 126th birthday!

Just in case you do not know who Erwin Schrodinger is, he is the one that is famous for Schrödinger's cat Paradox. (Of course, this Nobel Prize winning physicist's contribution is much greater than just the theoretical cat)

I'd like to celebrate the great mind with Sheldon's explanation :)

Why I Can Relate to Sheldon Cooper - Being Accurate

I know how annoying it is to have someone constantly correcting your mistakes, I also know how annoying it is to have someone constantly nagging about the inaccurate facts. I knew this years ago, but it is Sheldon that makes me realize how annoying (yet funny) is this habit and I'm now consciously trying to suppress my urge to correct others in my daily conversation.

However, my colleagues will tell you how I fail from time to time, and how not funny I am when I do this. I just love being accurate. I even love to have someone else corrected me so that I learn another new facts. The only problem I have is, how could I make it as funny as Sheldon?

Example 1: Captain hook's hand was eaten by a crocodile not an alligator. If you're going to insult me at least get your facts straight.

Example 2: Where exactly does the half-sandwich come from? Are you giving me half of someone else's sandwich, or do I have to wait for someone in the restaurant to order the other half? (To be honest, I have the same question when I first visited USA too!!)

Example 3:
Penny: I give up. He's impossible!
Sheldon: I can't be impossible; I exist! I think what you meant to say is, 'I give up; he's improbable'.

A Happy Customer

It was all started with Wei Wei bought me a lovely T-shirt on-line.
It was bought from Threadless, and it is named as "Mozart: Decomposing since 1791". It is clever, nerdy and funny, and I love it!
However, this didn't turn me into an on-line shopper. Not yet.

Mozart: Decomposing since 1791

In the beginning of this year, I accidentally fell in love with The Big Bang Theory, and I was crazily searching for the nerdy T-shirt and shower curtain online, and that's how I ended up became an on-line shopper. Threadless is the online store with all the crazy/funny/nerdy designs, and all these designs come with awesome names, just like all the classic art work!

(1) First Purchase
My first purchase was cool. It was separated into 2 shipments because some orders were available while some orders need re-print. The first parcel I received was a great art in a squishy bag :)

My first ever Threadless on-line shopping experience

It contained a very cool T-shirt that is full with spoilers. This T-shirt is named "Spoilt". I didn't want to over pampered myself so even though I love this design so much, I decided to buy for En and not myself.
Spoilt

I also got myself a pack of 3 notebooks, as my future travel journal.
From left: "Thumbper", "Field Study 01" and "Break Free"

The second batch of my first purchase did arrive as planned. I had an extremely bad episode with POS Malaysia. Anyway, due to Threadless' excellence customer service, I was so glad with them (and of course, so glad with all the e-vouchers too), I had my 2nd purchase real soon....
From left: Life of Pie, Hugs Keep Us Alive, Life of Pie, Midnight Snack

(2) Second Purchase
During my second purchase, I was telling myself that it is ok since I'm only going to spend with my 20% discount voucher. So, this time, I decided to spend the voucher on all the more expensive series, including Marvel, Disney and Sesame Street.

To ease my guilt, I bought one each for Wei and En too. En got a very cool Vitruviron Man, while Wei got the one that she previously pointed out as super cute "Bad Hair Day".

Vitruviron Man

Bad Hair Day

I, on the other hand, got myself THREE!!!
From Left: "Evil Dr. Porkchop", "We're Gonna Need a Bigger Cookie", "Infinito"

I bought "Evil Dr. Porkchop" because, you know, who doesn't love the imaginary Evil Dr. Porkchop!? You'd especially enjoy it if you watch Toy Story 3 in Cantonese, where he appeared in a dramatic entrance with Andy shouting "邪恶猪扒博士来啦!"

I bought the "We're Gonna Need a Bigger Cookie" not because I like Cookie Monster, but I think the Jaws-Poster-design is clever and funny. I could almost hear the ostinato bass dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dum....

I HAVE TO buy Infinito! It reminded me of the crazy Spanish-mode-Buzz. Just in case you forgot about that hilarious scene, watch this:

(3) Third Purchase
I forgot how, but after all the great experiences I had with Threadless, I ended up with 3 e-voucher that worth USD10 each. To stop myself from the extremely-frequent-on-and-off browsing of Threadless website, I've decided to spend that 3 e-vouchers in one shot and end the short term addiction. (Well, you should notice, I didn't say "final purchase")
From Left: "Penny", "The Three Trials", "The Gaming Revolution"

I wanted to get Ah En a Star Wars inspired design named "Emperor". The Force is strong with this one. However, the die hard gamer opted for "The Gaming Revolution", which I don't quite understand. I mean the design.

I got myself "The Three Trials". Something only the Indiana Jones Fans would get excited about. Besides, it is never easy to find a great Indiana Jones T-shirt. The last time I went to Bangkok night market, they have almost every famous films design, except Indy!

And I just got to buy "Penny"!
Though some people complained that it looks nothing like Kaley, but I think that's the point. You have to guess!
First, of course, it is a penny.
Secondly, you must pay attention to see "In Nerds We Trust" to link it to The Big Bang Theory, and hence, Penny :)
I love it!

I look at my Threadless experience, and I concluded their success as below:
1) Excellence customer service is the key!
If Crystal (Threadless Help Ambassador) is not as friendly or as helpful as she is, I might have gave up talking to POS Malaysia, and I might have considered that a loss. Most probably, I will never visit Threadless again, or worse still, totally abandon online shopping FOREVER!
2) DESIGN is the soul.
Threadless have endless cool designs that made it stand out from various on-line T-shirt shops. It suits the needs of huge spectrum of coolness :)
3) Embrace talents
Threadless welcome talents all around the world to submit their art work to various design challenges (with different themes). I bet this is how they get endless sources of awesomeness.

Why I Can Relate to Sheldon Cooper - The Need of Perfect TV Screen

"The Big Bang Theory" Season 7 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. with back-to-back episodes on CBS. While waiting, I'd like to continue my blog about "Why I Can Relate to Sheldon".

*After complaining of dead pixels on Raj's TV, Sheldon says "Oh look, it's Harry Potter and 98% of Sorcerer's stone!"

I myself is very particular about my TV screen too. My hate for Samsung brand started years ago when my dad bought our first ever flat screen tube TV. It was from Samsung.

It started to have a "shadow" line at the middle of the screen, just a few weeks after we bought it. Since it was still under warranty, my dad brought it back to the store and got the free exchange.

Few weeks later, this free-exchanged-new-TV had the "shadow" again. My dad brought it back to the store again. This time he didn't get the free exchange (most probably because the store owner couldn't see the shadow as what we claimed) but the TV set was sent back to Samsung for "repair".
The "repaid" TV showed the shadow again, few weeks later!

My dad sent to the store again, and we waited a few weeks for the second repair.
When the repaired-for-second-time-supposedly-new-TV finally came back to our living room, we still found the shadow!!

My dad gave up complaining, and I hate Samsung ever since.

That thin darker zone across the screen spoiled all my great movies marathon moments! For years!

So, no, I don't think Sheldon is weird complaining about the 98% of the Sorcerer's Stone.

Michael J. Fox

Accidentally saw this on Youtube and I love it!! Can't wait for this show!

Micheal J. Fox is an important part of my childhood. Family Ties is practically one of my English teachers in my earlier life, where I have "weekly evening classes" for years; Back to the Future is one of my all time favorites, where I have the trilogy in VHS, VCD, DVD, and Blu-ray.

I'm thrilled to see him return with a new sitcom!

Why I Can Relate to Sheldon Cooper - Star Wars Fans

I am not as smart, I am not as nerd, I am not as blunt, I am not as socially awkward as he does, but yes, I do think I can relate to Sheldon Cooper. (hopefully I am not 1/10 as arrogant as he is). He is just the extreme version of many of us.....

I have a lot to say, about why I can relate to Sheldon Cooper. However, instead of starting to explain myself, I would like to start with one simple crazy reason: Star Wars Fans.

If you want to know how we siblings trigger, discuss and execute our year-end-Star-Wars-Marathon, the enthusiasm level is probably almost like this:

"May the 4th" be with you!! :)

Package from Threadless

SPOILER ALERT!

The Geekiest Games of TBBT

I found certain games that the guys in The Big Bang Theory play pretty amusing. I'm not referring to the video games or board games or card games that they still playing today. I am referring to the cooler, geekier, funnier games that they played back then, in the earlier seasons.

1) To switch on light through satellite (S01E09)
The guys are in awe (and so do TBBT fans around the world) when they hooked their lights, stereo and radio-controlled cars to the Internet, allowing them to be controlled remotely. It is the idea that count, it is "because we can" :)

2) starch and water (S02E03)
How come we never had non-Newtonian fluid experiment in school? Our science labs need more fun than our current syllabus.

3) Secret Agent Laser Obstacle Lunch / Chess (S02E18)
Be it Secret Agent Laser Obstacle lunch or chess, seeing them acting like Johnny English in action with Sabre Dance as background music is hilarious. I do think these are some cool games that we can play when all my crazy cousins are around.

4) Time Machine (S01E14)
OK, honestly, I do think the idea of playing with the time machine is quite dumb. However, I somehow feel connected, seeing 4 of them being so obsessed with a game that all of them enjoy. With a little bit of imagination, it is like being a child all over again.

Top 10 Funniest Scenes in TBBT (as of till Season 5)

Earlier this month, when I were troubled by some doubts, and my faith being challenged, I needed some "breathing window" to escape. I turned to "The Big Bang Theory" for temporary-run-away-from-reality. Most of the time, when I'm free and alone, I would randomly pick some scenes from Youtube and let TBBT entertains me.

There are certain scenes in The Big Bang Theory that I could watch a million times and still can't stop laughing. It's hard to choose only 10 so I decided to pick only those that you don't have to :

Here's My Top 10 Funniest Scenes:

1) The Leonard Nimoy's Napkin(The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis)
To date, this is still THE funniest scene from The Big Bang Theory. For the first 15 minutes of the show, I was anticipating what would Sheldon get for Penny and what would she give him? Apparently, Penny is the biggest winner of Christmas gifts giver! The used, autographed napkin of Leonard Nimoy!
Sheldon's reaction is definitely one of the funniest minute that I have ever seen on TV, and his little hug at the end is pure gold! It's a Saturnalia miracle :)

2) Sheldon Comforting Penny at the Hospital
Sheldon sent Penny to hospital after she slipped in the shower and dislocated her shoulder. He is as annoying as usual. However, upon Penny's request, he has to comfort her. He, even though do not know exactly what to do, actually tried very hard. The face he makes, kill!!!

3) Joker's Smile
The scariest and the most hilarious smile ever!

4) The Tall Man from Cornwall
This is classic:
There was a tall man from Cornwall,
Whose length exceeded his bed,
My body fits on it but barely upon it,
There's no room for my big Cornish head

5) Drake Equation
First of all, it is very entertaining to see how fast Sheldon Cooper / Jim Parsons can speak.
Secondly, that satisfactory smile on his face is priceless!

6) Sheldon talks to Amy's mother
Only Sheldon can say these without being wretched. He sounds innocent and clueless :)

7) Tiger Eye
This almost-0-conversation-0-action-scene always bring me to tears

8) Sheldon's Drunk Speech
Sheldon overcame his stage freight and started to sing the Elements Song
(I googled the "Elements Song" and this song actually exist!! No joke!! Tom Lehrer must be a real-life nerdiest pianist!! I blog about this earlier this month)

9)Sheldon's Acoustic Sweet Spot
I couldn't help but pity Leonard.

10) C-Men
Being Sheldon's friends could be very dumbfounding sometimes......

The Elements Song

If you think I'm going to blog about Sheldon Cooper again, I'm sorry that I have to disappoint you :)

Because of The Big Bang Theory, I googled "The Elements Song" and I accidentally came across this real life funniest, nerdiest, coolest singer / song-writer / pianist / mathematician -- Tom Lehrer!! He is SOOOO adorable!

This is the life recording of Tom Lehrer singing the Elements Song at Copenhagen in 1967. I don't understand how could the audience sit there clapping calmly. If I were there, I would roar in hysterics.

OK, now let's sing along:

ARTIST: Tom Lehrer
TITLE: The Elements

There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium
And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium
And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium
And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium
Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium
And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium
And gold and protactinium and indium and gallium

Sheldon Cooper

(Since Jim Parsons turned 40 on 24th March, and since I'm currently having mind block for my travel blog, I have decided to blog about Sheldon Cooper and continue my travel blog later)

In my heart, there's always a soft spot for physicists. I always believe that in our 红尘, in the academic world, they are those that closest to the truth. I love the intelligent and child-like Einstein, I adore the multifaceted Richard Feynman, and I even understand why that young lady fall in love with Yang ZhenNing.

So, I think it is pretty logical that I love the fictional physicist, Dr. Sheldon Cooper (B.S., M.S., M.A., PhD., ScD., and OMG :p ), one of the funniest and most original character on television.
A recently discovered species of bee in Brazil was named Euglossa bazinga.
An asteroid was named 247247 Sheldoncooper.
Looking at the facts above, I'm sure I am not the only one who love Sheldon Cooper.

Even though Sheldon Cooper is just one lab accident away from being a super villain, even though he is super annoying with inflated ego, still, everyone loves Dr. Sheldon Cooper.

I love the geeky Sheldon. Even though I am not a Trekkie, I like the fact that he speaks Klingon. I think only person that can speak Klingon qualified to be a real Trekkie.

I love the way he is specific and accurate about everything. He would blow his nose into handkerchief and ask others whether this is moss green or forest green; When he is to pick his car colour, he specifically wanted the 'light blue of Luke's lightsaber was, before the digital remastering'; He describes Acrophobia as not a fear of heights but fear of falling; I love how he explained his spot "In the winter this seat is close enough to the radiator to remain warm and not so close as to cause perspiration. In the summer it is directly in the path of the cross breeze created by the opening windows there and there. It faces the television at an angle that is neither direct, thus discourage conversation, but not so far wide as to create a parallax distortion"; "Love is in the air? Wrong. Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon and Carbon Dioxide are in the air"; "It's not a cartoon, it's anime" etc.

I love how he and his friends fond of comic books, costumes, role-playing games, video games, collectible card games, action figures, fantasy, science fictions. I am not as crazy but I could always understand the fondness. I guess when other people look at how excited Wei Wei, En En and I talk about the movies / games / TV series that we love, they may think we are flibbertigibbet too.

I love his vintage T-shirts, be it superhero logos or the Philips Test Pattern or the Melting Rubik's Cube or the super crazily geeky "73" (Sheldon says “The best number is 73…. 73 is the twenty-first prime number. Its mirror, 37, is the twelfth and its mirror, 21, is the product of multiplying (hang on to your hats) 7 and 3. In binary, 73 is a palindrome: 1-0-0-1-0-0-1, which backwards is 1-0-0-1-0-0-1.”). His vintage T-shirts had made me fall in love with t-shirts all over again. Wei Wei and I have been "window shopping" for TBBT t-shirts online for quite some time.

I also love the fact that he is always very sure of himself in a lot of ways. "You know me to be a very smart man. Don't you think that if I were wrong, I'd know it?"

CBS released photo: Jim Parsons & Leonard Nimoy on the set

Sheldon Cooper is one of the most "spot on" and successful character in recent sitcom universe. The Big Bang Theory writers working very hard to put every possible imaginable nerdy awkward moment into Sheldon's character. He is the crazy smart that everyone loves to hate, and yet, Jim Parsons has successfully turned him into one of the most adorable character in the fictional world.

Thank you, and happy birthday, Jim Parsons.

Sin City

The Las Vegas Strip

Las Vegas is a very interesting city to most people. Not me and Sheldon. (Dr. Sheldon: You know, I'm given to understand that there's an entire city in Nevada devoted specifically to help people like Howard forget their problems. They replace them with new problems such as alcoholism, gambling addiction and sexually transmitted diseases.)

It's not that I didn't enjoy my visit there, it's just that I'm not so keen on casinos, entertainments and shopping. The one thing that I really can relate with and makes me really love the idea of visiting Las Vegas is CSI, one of my all time favorite TV series :) However, we didn't take any "CSI tours", all the advertisements seems a bit stupid to me.

We started our Las Vegas trip by doing shopping at Las Vegas Premium Outlets. Before we got ourselves accommodation, before we had our proper meal, before we did anything else at Las Vegas, we went straight to the outlets and had great time shopping. Both of us had almost equal share of spending and fun. It is a bit crazy for me, maybe once in a life time experience.

After the shopping, we drove along Las Vegas Boulevard for the scenic night view, and also to pick a hotel that we'd love to stay. Since there are so many hotels along Las Vegas Strip, it's hard to choose. We decided to let Agoda to make the decision for us. We drove to McD and use the free wifi, went to Agoda website, set the filter with "Las Vegas Strip", "5 Stars" and "below USD100" and agreed that the first hotel that come out from the search should be the one.

This led us to Flamingo Hotel, which happened to be a great deal! I dropped Ching Ching at the lobby so that she can check in while I waited in the car. When she finally completed the check in procedure, she came out with an expression that shout UNBELIEVABLE! This 5 stars hotel cost us only USD45, even after tax it's only USD50.40. This is the cheapest hotel we stayed for our 15 days South West USA trip!

Since we were way below budget for accommodation, we decided to spoil ourselves with some great meals We went to the Olives at Bellagio, found ourselves a great seat at outdoor, just besides the fountain at Lake Bellatio. 3 minutes later, a waiter came and told us that the kitchen is closed. We checked our watch and surprised that it's already 10pm!! and we haven't had our dinner!!

So, no great dining experience at Las Vegas for us. Almost all fine dining / contemporary dining restaurants are closed after 10pm. We ended up having down to earth meal at our hotel.

The next morning, we started our day with great breakfast at Serenipity 3, at Ceasars Palace. The restaurant is cheerfully decorated in orange and pink (a very strange colour combination but turn out surprisingly pleasant). We had our breakfast at the patio. It is fun to have small talks here while most parts of Las Vegas is still asleep.

After the breakfast, we started to walk along the Strips. It's totally different view and experience as compare to night time. There were less tourists in the morning, which means we could take a lot of photos without strangers in them. It also means we could take our own sweet time to walk rather than rushing along.

After exploring the Strip, we, just like any other tourists, went to Freemont Street. Of course, we were supposed to visit this place the night before, but we were too exhausted then, we decided that the Freemont Street can wait.

Freemont Street is not interesting at all during day time. We did some souvenirs shopping, and the little girl went to weigh herself under the sign of "OVER 350 lbs EATS FREE!" Of course, she is way below target even with her backpack.

Before heading to Big Bear Lake, we HAD TO take photo with the famous Las Vegas sign!

We were very surprise to see the super long queue, and we were not as patience as these people. So, instead of waiting in the queue, we decided to stand beside the queue, and had our post ready. As soon as the other tourists finish their photo shoot and before another one come into the picture, we could take some fine pictures :)

So this is how your picture looks like if you refused to wait in the line:

Mayim Bialik

I am not sure if you do notice, I have just recently added another link at "吃饱没事做?阿盈向你推荐" - Mayim Bialik's blog.

As I told you earlier, recently I've been addicted to The Big Bang Theory. So I started to watch video clips on Youtube and googled about The Big Bang Theory, then Sheldon Cooper, then Jim Parsons, and then almost everything about The Big Bang Theory. And this is how I came across The Official Mayim Bialik's Blog.

When Amy Farrah Fowler first appeared in the final episode of season 3, I actually love the idea of having a female version of Sheldon Cooper, they seems like a perfect match! And I did somehow find this face familiar.

However, in Season 4, I do not like the way this character developed. Amy is quite annoying sometimes,  being too harsh and trying too hard  (and I was happy that Sheldon described her as his friend who is a girl but not not his girlfriend.) I think at this point, the writers were trying very hard to find the balance between making her a female-version of Sheldon Cooper and at the same time likeable. After all, making an easily unlikeable character a likeable one is actually Jim Parson's thing.

It is in mid of Season 5 that the writers finally found the rhythm. The chemistry between Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik makes Shamy moments subtly sweet and enjoyable. Like Sheldon, my feelings for her has been increased too. :)

So I googled her, and I finally know why I felt that she looks familiar. She was Blossom Russo! (Well, I never watched that TV series in the 90s, but back then, they were not much shows on the TV and we basically know almost every shows aired. Blossom was quite popular back then), and she was in Beaches too.

It was when I watched one of the interviews on Youtube that I found out that she was actually accepted by Harvard and Yale (but she chose to attend UCLA to be close to her parents!) She earned Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience, Hebrew and Jewish studies, and she completed her PhD in Neuroscience!!She is Dr. Mayim Bialik!! So, this is how I started to read her blogs.

I enjoy reading her blog posts. I respect her devotion to religious, I respect her passion in science and education, I respect her being a vegan, and I respect her practice in attachment parenting. Putting her political opinion aside, I think she is sophisticated and inspiring. Besides, her blogs sometimes including behind the scenes of The Big Bang Theory too! So here I am, recommending her blog to you :)

Latest update as of July 2016, Mayim has a new fantastic site: Grok Nation

Rock Scissors Paper Lizards Spock

I seriously think we should upgrade from Rock Scissors Paper to a more civilized method when come to deciding who to do the chores or who to decide what shows to watch for CNY countdown:

Get it? No? Sheldon says it's very simple:
Scissors cuts paper, paper covers rock, rock crushes Lizard, Lizard poisons Spock, Spock smashes scissors, scissors decapitates Lizard, Lizard eats paper, paper disproves Spock, Spock vaporizes rock, and as it always has, rock crushes scissors.
